Wagotabi® is a combination of 2 Japanese words and 3 Kanji that perfectly connect with our project: 和語旅.
The first word, 和語 (composed of the Kanji 和 - Harmony/Japan and 語 - Language ) is pronounced wago, it is an ancient way to say the Japanese language. The second word, 旅 means travel and is pronounced tabi. Altogether 和語旅 (Wagotabi) describes a journey through the Japanese language.
We are a small indie team of passionate learners and creators. This is our dream project and we are currently 4 people working on our free time on this project.
Wagotabi already launched on iOS and Android! Wagotabi will launch on PC (Windows, Mac, Linux) on August 13 2025.
We have crossed all major Japanese textbook contents and extracted the essential concepts to include for a beginner starting from zero. These words are introduced in a way that fits the RPG development and every concept is used almost right away and reused as the game progresses.
Over 300 teachers (half of them native Japanese speakers) have tested the game and gave us feedback on its contents. This helped us improve the concept step by step. Some teachers already use the app in their classes to illustrate some situations and provide interactions to their students. A lot of these teachers also suggested the game to their students.
The current number of words and grammar concepts included in the game is updated on the website's main page. More content will be added gradually as more towns and prefectures are added.
There is currently no level skip feature. However, you can skip words you already know in lessons to speed up the early phase of the game.
We are regularly updating the game (see update history). However, we do not have a predetermined release schedule because we prioritize quality of the content over time pressure.
The game can be used offline, internet is not needed for any purpose in the game other than giving us an in-game feedback or leaderboards.
We are developing this game specifically focusing on Japanese language learning. Since we aim for maximal immersion, we decided to focus only on Japan and can thus provide an unprecedented level of linguistic, cultural and geographical immersion.
Absolutely! But keep in mind you should always add a link to our website "https://www.wagotabi.com" in the description of your content.

The game progress is saved automatically, no action is needed.
Yes, a cloud save system is available, allowing you to seamlessly share your progress across all devices and store versions (iOS, Android, Steam). To activate it, go to the player menu options and create an account using 'Enable (Sign in).' Once your account is created, click 'Login'.
Yes.
Yes.
No, this is not possible at the moment. You will need to start a new game, and will be able to skip the demo content from there.
To exit the game, please go to the player menu on the top left of the game screen, then to the settings, click on the "Exit Game" button.
To restart the game, please go to the player menu on the top left of the game screen, then to the settings and click on the "New Game" button. This will create a new save slot and will not erase your current progress.
This happens on some devices. To avoid it go to the Player Menu and disable "Light effects" in the settings.
On iOS, to hear the game sound please toggle the Ring/Silent switch of your phone.
Yes. The cloud save is a completely optional feature, just like all the other online features of the game. The game is fully playable offline, and saves are always kept locally, even if they are also uploaded to the cloud. So yes, if you don’t create an account, the game will save automatically to your device and load automatically during your next session. You can also have as many save slots as you want.
Yes. The game natively supports the Steam Cloud save feature, meaning all your current local saves are transferred to the Steam Cloud. It’s more powerful than our own cloud save system because all your save slots can be recovered on any Steam-connected device. In our cloud save system, one email is linked to one save slot (so you would need one email per save slot to synchronize them all).
Yes. You can create an account and upload your save to the cloud at any time, and it will not affect your current save. To create an account and link your current save slot to it, click on “Enable (Sign In)”. To log in on another device for the first time, go to “Load Game”, select “Load from the Cloud”, and enter your credentials (email and password).
To continue on mobile, the game will ask for an email and password combination. You can use any email address (even a non-existent one). However, if you use a non-existent email, you won’t be able to use the “Forgot Password” feature. It does not need to be the email linked to your Google or Apple account.
Yes, you can switch to another email without losing your local content. It requires a few steps. First, click on “Delete Online Save Data.” Then, you can create a new account with a new email by clicking “Enable (Sign In)” as you did before.
